Blossom Hill @ NCCS
The theme of the fair was community and Blossom Hill’s founder, Shiva Sarram, shared her story of immigrating to the United States from Iran as a young girl. Being part of her new home and feeling part of the community were vital to her success. Shiva therefore encouraged the students to show compassion; to learn more about the current refugee crisis; and to realize that simple gestures can make all the difference.
Shiva reminded the students that the 8 billion people sharing the planet are much more similar than different. We all want a safe, nurturing environment to grow up in; and, "those" kids "far" away in the Middle East have the same wishes, hopes and dreams as kids right here in this auditorium -- to grow to become teachers, doctors, artists and athletes. So the next time you meet someone new, ask to hear her or his story. It is the first step toward building community.
